P0299 OBD Error Code - TURBO UNDERBOOST

What is P0299 fault?

If you feel there is an issue with your vehicle, you may plug in an OBD reader for some information. A P0299 fault code indicates turbo underboost. Which means your vehicle is not boosting as it should, at a lower output than OE specification.

This does not always indicate turbo Failure!

This fault, does not always mean your turbo is on its way out or failed. Quite often it could be a number of other things including:

  • An air leak in your boost pipes, from splitting.
  • Emission Gas Recycler (EGR) fault.
  • Boost pressure sensor fault.
  • Low oil pressure.

What symptoms are you looking for when P0299 comes up?

  • Engine light on dashboard
  • Small difference (or none) in acceleration, when the turbo is engaged at speed.
  • Mechanical noise if the turbo is failing or if the sound is cutting in and out.
  • Or lack of acceleration or engine power in general.

How to get it sorted...

Firstly, if we get a call from a customer saying they have a P0299 fault code showing up, we will tell them, it is hard to know what is going on, until we take a look at it. Checking all of the components above will allow us to find the root issue we are facing. Replacing boost pipes, reconditioning the turbo exc. will ensure your vehicles boost issue is fixed. Though, if the turbo is in good condition, working order, we wouldn't replace it!
