What is a DPF?

DPF stands for Diesel Particulate filter, in 2009 it was standard for all diesel vehicles to be fitted with one to prevent soot or particle matter entering the atmosphere causing damage to the environment.

How do DPFs (diesel Particulate Filters)work?

The DPF is a soot trap that collects particles from the exhaust emissions. The exhaust gasses flow into the DPF, but are unable to escape down the same channel as the exit is blocked. The gasses escape through the porous cell walls leaving the particulate matter which is too large to escape trapped with in the DPF. The DPF disposes of the soot during a process called "regeneration" when the particulates are burnt off. On a proper functioning vehicle regeneration should occur approximately every 500 miles. This can vary significantly depending on the vehicle and driving conditions. If the Vehicle is unable to regenerate, then to keep you vehicle in full power you will need to get the DPF cleaned.

Why do DPF's (diesel particulate Filters) Fail?

The most common reason for the failure of a DPF is that is has become too clogged with soot to be able to regenerate. It is easy in this instance to assume the DPF is faulty and look to replace it. If no diagnostic work is carried out, then there is a high chance your new DPF will fail within a short period of time too.

What happens to my vehicle if I don't get the DPF cleaned

A blocked DPF means the soot particles that usually collect in the filter and get burned off when the regeneration occurs are now building up in other parts of your cars system.

Some other Impacts

  • Turbo may become blocked causing the Turbo to fail
  • EGR blocked
  • Back Pressure on the engine
