How to prevent a turbocharger from failing:

High quality oil

A turbocharger relies on the engine's oil to lubricate and cool it's moving parts. Using low-quality or dirty oil can cause excessive wear and tear on the turbocharger, which can lead to premature failure. Make sure you use high-quality oil that meets the manufacturer's specifications and change it regularly.

Warm up and cool down your engine

Turbochargers generate a lot of heat, and so warming up your engine and cooling it down properly ensures the turbochargers inside components do not damage. Before setting off on your journey, allow your engine to run idle for a couple minutes to let the oil circulate and the turbocharger to be warmed up. Understandably, this isn't possible on days you are in a rush, simply try to do this as much as you can, reducing the risk. After driving let your engine run idle for a few minutes, just like before to allow the turbo to cool off before shutting down the engine.

Avoid regular hard acceleration

Although, it is tempting and more enjoyable to push your engine to its limits, this can put strain on your vehicles turbocharger. Attempt to alter your driving style and avoid hard acceleration and high engine speeds, especially when the engine is colder at the start of the journey.

Regular maintenance to your vehicle

Of course, regular vehicle maintenance helps a whole lot of things in regards to our cars inner workings, and that includes your turbocharger. Regular inspections that include taking a look at your turbo can find issues before they potentially get bigger and cause knock on effects to other components. Also, regularly changing your oil and oil filter every 5000 miles or 12 months, is a key way to ensure your turbo has a healthy feed of oil.

Don't ignore your vehicles warning signs!

If you notice anything that indicates your turbo is on it's way out, hesitation in getting it sorted can cause catastrophic damage to your turbo, along with other vehicle components as an aftershock. These warning signs can consist of excessive smoke from the exhaust, loss of power and unusual noises; like whistling or chirping.
